St. Privat de Champclos and around

St. Privat de Champclos

Is about one hour’s drive to the sea, your first impressions of an authentic Provence backcountry that stretches between the rivers Ardèche and Cèze and the Cévennes mountains. This is where the ancestral character of the The region has been preserved, unlike the South Coast area.

This village can be found only on Michelin type detailed maps, due to the fact that it is more a hamlet than a village, and collectively with other surrounding hamlets there are only 100 or so inhabitants. The village center, placed right next to and around the old church, is composed of just a dozen houses and farms. The village is on a hillside with views looking West over the Cévennes, and East, where, on a very clear summers’ day one can even see the Mont Ventoux.

Barjac at night

The town of Barjac lies approximately 3 km North facing a vast valley that stretches South and downwards, sprawling through dense thicket towards the Cèze river. To come on holiday here means to make the most of endless meadows and paddocks, vineyards, lavender fields, and the enchantment of songbirds. Setting out from St Privat, one can undertake cross-country walks, use the bicycle, go on excursions, and all summer bathing in the Cèze or the Ardèche.
